Description:
Abstract:
This data set is a point shapefile of centroids of Public Land Survey System (PLSS) units ranging from Townships to Quarter-Quarter-Sections. The data are derived from the Wisconsin DNR's "Landnet" database, automated from 1:24,000-scale sources.
Purpose:
This data set provides a means of identifying an x-y coordinate for the approximate center (centroid) of landnet units based on the corresponding standardized PLSS description (e.g., for PLSS Section this is DTRS -- Direction, Township, Range, and Section codes). This process is sometimes referred to as "protraction". The Landnet centroid shapefile includes coordinates in WTM83/91 and latitude/longitude expressed as decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and seconds.

The features in the 24K Landnet database are presented for cartographic reference only and are not intended to be official or authoritative. Survey by a registered land surveyor is the only legal basis for determining actual land boundaries or locating PLSS corners.

Note that the USGS 24K topo maps were the source for the majority of data incorporated in the 24K Landnet database, but that various other data were also used. The 24K Landnet database was produced using workstation ArcInfo - Rev. 7, at the Wisconsin DNR Central Office in Madison, WI. ArcInfo regions were incorporated to more easily manage the various related themes. Data from cooperators were created on a variety of software and hardware platforms and converted to ArcInfo format. For a complete description of the processes used to create the 24K Landnet, refer to the '24K Landnet Process Documentation', 1996, Wisconsin DNR.

Centroid point locations were derived from the 24K Landnet database using a process that involved generating label points using ArcInfo. In cases where one or more corners of a PLSS unit fall on land outside the Wisconsin state boundary, the centroid of the PLSS unit was forced to fall inside the state by an automated process. This resulted in some anomalous centroid locations in areas near the Wisconsin state boundary.
