when unzipped, this creates an Arc/Info grid
named wlcgw930 and its accompanying info

The files in these directories can be used
by ArcView users to create a legend for the
Land Cover map in TIF format (level 2
                          classification). Instructions for using the
legend key and legend shapefile with ArcView
                          are provided below.

To restore the WISCLAND Land Cover Grid data, extract the zipfile
(wlc_grid.zip) using WinZip; the latest version of WinZip
is available on the internet at the WinZip home page: www.winzip.com.

Decompression of the zipfile will result in an ArcInfo
grid directory named wlcgw930, and an accompanying info directory.
Together these directories are just over 75MB, uncompressed.
Do NOT decompress the zipfile at a location where an info directory
already exists, or information may be lost.

B. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE ARCVIEW LEGEND FILE
ArcView users can display the Land Cover map in TIF format
(level 2 classification) by carrying out the following
steps in the View document window:

1. Add the Land Cover map in TIF format <wlciw930> to the View
as an image data source.

2. Add the Map legend key shapefile <Wlc_key.shp> to the View as a
feature data source (i.e., as a vector theme); (see information
about the directory structure of this site, above.

3. Select <Wlc_key.shp> to make the theme active.

4. Double-click on the active theme to open the Legend Editor.

5. Click on the <Load...> button in the Legend Editor dialog box.
The <Load Legend> dialog box will pop up.

6. In the <Load Legend> box, navigate to the location of the
ArcView Legend File <lvl2_pc.avl> (see information about the
directory structure of this site, above)

7. Select <lvl2_pc.avl> and click on <OK>.

8. A <Load Legend> box will pop up with the <Value> field highlighted
and the <All> box checked. Click on <OK>. This will cause the
Land Cover level 2 legend to be appear in the Legend Editor.

9. In the Legend Editor window, click <Apply>. This will cause the
Land Cover level 2 legend to appear in your View window. You may now
close the Legend Editor.

10. Make the image theme <wlciw930> active, click on the
<zoom to active theme(s)> button in the View window, and click on the
box to the left of the image theme to draw the land cover map.

The map legend key shapefile is not intended for display. It serves
strictly as a means of loading the land cover level 2 classification
symbols into the View. If drawn to the screen, the map legend key
shapefile has the appearance of a set of vertically stacked boxes
which draw below the land cover map. To re-set the View extent to the
land cover map, turn off the map legend key theme and repeat step 10, above.

NOTE: If you wish to add the map legend key to an ArcView Layout,
you will need to turn on the map legend key shapefile in the View
to enable the theme legend to draw in the Layout.

C. GEOGRAPHIC REFERENCING

The WISCLAND Land Cover grid and accompanying vector data are provided
referenced to the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator coordinate system,
based on the 1991 adjustment to the North American Datum of 1983
(WTM83/91). The coordinate system and map projection parameters for
WTM83/91 are:

UNITS METERS
DATUM HPGN
PROJECTION TRANSVERSE
